Generally I find those old Taper's Guides are useful . Most of the time I fined their reviews a bit more "sober" than the stared reviews on this site, which you have to read why they like, or don;t like . Sometimes it's how much fun someone had/didn't have at the reviewed show , etc. I find the opinions in this forum more useful, with some folk having some serious insight into particular eras .
But you really have to listen for yourself and it is all pretty subjective.
I remember after the first set of an mid 80's Irvine show, going to the can to take a leak, and thinking what a lame set they had played . I overhear two younger Heads saying what a fantastic set that was ! I started thinking, I may be right, but for those guys, they were having a great time .
I try to hear what is good with a particular show . I think if you dismissed this show for not being a kick ass rocker, you would be missing something, as I see you would concur .

Like you said I find you have to listen for yourself.I haven't read a Taper guide review and for the most part reviews on this site are inane.

This is a show I was lucky enough to be at. I don't recall it being "lacking in energy," but then I don't recall anything of much use at all, I'm afraid. Except that it's a Possible Candidate for my famous Jerry Smiled and Nodded At Me moment.

Which I don't even know when it happened. Except that it was sometime before '82 cuz Jerry was on his old side, and a small enough theater that I could get up front and dance in the aisle. I can't even tell you the song, which is too bad, cuz then I could at least narrow down the show. And then I could add it to the reviews so it would be preserved eternally in all its historic significance to help guide others to shows they absolutely MUST hear :-) But oh well.

Btw I like the mix of show tales and reviews in the IA review section; the tales are there for history's sake, and that's great. Would be nice if the Taper's Guides were online, though. And I look forward to the completion of Strat's '81 In Review Mega-Project.

I guess I misses that story . Talk about making you a Deadhead( or at least a Garciahead ) for life !
The problem with the "tales" is that they skew the "rating" . I mean, any show I attended and Garcai smiled at me, no matter how crappy they played would get 5 stars !
